SEAT Leon CUPRA ST 300 4drive Performance PackSpa Francorchamps Public Driving Experience - run 10 -27.09.2017

By Jonathan CrouchIntroductionThe third generation SEAT Leon was the first to be made available as an estate, this station wagon model badged 'ST' and sold in 'Type 5F'-series guise between 2013 and 2020. With all the hi-tech design excellence of the Golf Estate it was based upon but much more affordable pricing and an arguably sportier look and feel, it's exactly the kind of car the Spanish brand needed during the 2013-20 period in this sector. But does it make sense as a used buy?HistorySo to the SEAT Leon ST, a compact estate that in this 'Typ 5F'-series form sold between 2013 and 2020 wasn't that compact. It's a sensible station wagon that claims to be sporty. A car of contradictions then, but one that promises to be quite appealing family transport. Back in 2013, this was the first time the Leon range had included an estate derivative, though SEAT had sold in this segment before with their Exeo ST model. That car though, was a rather half-hearted effort based on out-dated Audi A4 Avant underpinnings. This one was very different, launched in the UK early in 2014 and running on the same hi-tech MQB platform that underpinned the 7th generation Volkswagen Golf. Golf and Leon models shared most of the same engines too. This was, in short, a very thoroughly engineered product. Practical and sporty, it aimed to offer a more dynamic option to compact estate buyers, with a 'lifestyle' appeal that set out to also pique the interest of folk looking at Qashqai-class crossovers. The range was significantly facelifted in 2017 and the Leon ST in this form sold until Spring 2020, when it was replaced by an estate derivative of the all-new MK4 Leon You GetThis was one of the more dynamic shapes in the compact estate segment from the 2013-2020 period. To create it, the Spanish designers had to compromise a little on ultimate carriage capacity: without the smartly angled rear screen for example, you could certainly fit a bit more in, but then the car would look a little more boxy and boring. To start with, let's cover the basics. Which are that this ST rides on exactly the same wheelbase as its five-door hatchback stablemate but carries an extra 270mm of length behind the rear axle to accommodate its larger luggage compartment. The beady-eyed front end of course, is identical to that of any other Leon, a set of angular Audi-style headlamps with optional LED illumination sitting either side of the usual trapezoidal SEAT grille. It's a decisive, sharply drawn shape with a clean, crisp, racy look emphasised by the characteristic SEAT 'Linea Dinamica' profile line that runs rearwards over the arches. And it's also a clever piece of design as well as a good looking one, the angular panel work draped over SEAT's version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB modular transverse platform. On to the practicalities that estate buyers will prioritise. The loading height isn't particularly low and accessible, but that same comment applies to rival models that, like this car, have to comply with rear accident safety legislation. Raise the sloping tailgate though and you'll find a 587-litre boot that's a usefully square shape and fully 55% bigger than that of the hatchback model, though is 18 and 23-litres respectively smaller than the boots you'll find in estate versions of the Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Golf from this period: we don't think that's a large enough difference to matter too much to most family owners though, particularly as the space available in this SEAT is a very practical one, with bag hooks, a 12v power socket, a ski-hatch for longer items and tie-down points for an optional luggage net that'll keep your shopping in place should you get a bit carried away with your ST's sporty handling. At the bottom of the floor area, space for the optional spare wheel is carpeted, creating a deep storage area where that'll be useful for storing small, loose items. It's a pity that the tonneau cover can't be tilted upwards to ease loading, but we do like the way that it can be stored out of the way under the boot floor when not in use. And talking of the boot floor, it's one of those neat split-level ones, so you can reposition the cargo base to suit the load you're carrying. Put it in its highest position and you can create an almost completely flat load area when you push forward the split-folding rear bench, a process that's much easier if you've avoided one of the base-trimmed models that do without the 'Easy rear seat-back release' system. With this, the seatbacks are spring-loaded and automatically drop down when you pull on neat handles on the side of the cargo bay. Once the 60/40-split backrest has fallen flat, carriage capacity rises to 1,470-litres. Of course, even that may not be enough for really long items and if you're likely to be regularly carrying that sort of thing, then you'll need to get yourself a Leon ST whose original owner ticked the box for the optional fold-flat front passenger seat. This means you can carry items up to in length - say an extra-long step-ladder. Unfortunately, these extra-long items can't be too wide as the narrower (rather than the broader) section of the split backrest is the one directly behind the fold-flat front passenger seat. Now let's talk people rather than packages and discuss the back seat. One of SEAT's claims for this car - broadly borne out by the figures - is that it offers as much practicality as a larger estate from the next medium range segment up where you'd find station wagon versions of cars like Ford's Mondeo and Vauxhall's Insignia. That's something you certainly feel on the back seat of a Leon ST where, thanks to this SEAT's generous wheelbase dimensions, there's just as much head and legroom as you'd find in a more expensive car of that kind. True, the width of this cabin isn't as generous as it would be in a Mondeo, so three adults will need to be on friendly terms - but then that applies to all this SEAT's other most direct rivals. We should say though, that space for your head is a little more generous than it would be in a standard Leon hatchback, thanks to this estate model's longer roofline. The light colouring for the headlining helps the airy spacious feel, something original buyers could further enhance by opting for the huge panoramic glass sunroof specially developed for this ST body style. And up front? Well get behind the wheel and the only clue that you're at the wheel of an estate car is that the back screen is a touch further away from the rear view mirror. Otherwise, it's just as impressive a cabin environment as you'll find in any other third generation Leon model. There are charismatic touches like the unusual trapezoidal shapes for things like the door handles and the air vents. And you don't have to put up with arguably pointless features like push button starters and electronic handbrakes. We also prefer this car's higher placement of the infotainment touchscreen - or as SEAT likes to call it, the EASYCONNECT operating system - dominating the centre part of the dashboard and far more in your line of sight than it is in, say, a Golf. It's there to reduce button clutter by dealing with stereo, on board computer, phone, navigation, parking and, if specified, Drive Profile system functions, all operated via a screen that comes in two sizes, with carousel-style graphics also replicated on the additional display you'll find in the centre of the instrument cluster. This is a practical place to be too. The big glovebox is one of thirteen cubby holes dotted around the car, plus there are five closed cubbies in the doors and centre console as well as below and between the front seats. This is, after all, a family car first and foremost and should be equipped to swallow the paraphernalia of everyday to Look ForMost Leon owners we came across were pretty happy, but inevitably, there were a few issues. We came across a few reports of problems with DSG auto gearbox models - which could be expensive, so check the auto's functionality if you want a self-shifter. There was a report of a clutch and dual mass flywheel failure on a Leon FR that also went on to grind to a halt with clutch failure after being stuck in second gear. One owner had difficult selecting 1st and 4th in the manual gearbox. One Leon 130PS model had cold start kangarooing and hesitation problems. Corrosion is simply not an issue with SEATs and another reason why resale values are quite high. Check that the electronic systems work as advertised as there have been a few minor owner grumbles about warning lights spuriously appearing and then disappearing. Also, check that the air con system still throws out cold air, otherwise it may have to be re-gassed. Otherwise, just look out for kerbed alloy wheels, check for signs of interior child damage and of course insist on a fully stamped-up service Parts(approx based on a 2017 Leon ST TDI) A set of front brake pads are between £24-£68 (rears are between £17-£70). Front brake discs cost around £65-£83 (rears £24-£77). Air filters are in the £11 to £20 bracket. Oil filters cost around £6-£11 and fuel filters between £11 and £21. You'll pay around £200 for a headlight and around £157 for a tail lamp. A water pump is around £102-£190 and a radiator will be in the £126-£161 bracket. A starter motor is around £107-£ the RoadYou might not be surprised to learn that this Leon ST offers a very similar driving experience to that of its hatchback stablemates - which wasn't guaranteed given the fact that this variant must carry along 270mm of extra length behind its rear axle. In the event, it's not something you notice at the wheel, where the driving dynamics are every bit as good as they are across the rest of the Leon line-up. On the move, the Leon ST has a sportier feel than you'd find in the other VW Group products that share its stiff, sophisticated MQB platform. With earlier generation models, that used to put off some potential customers but with this MK3 design, the Spanish engineers managed to blend this car's firm responses with an acceptably-compliant standard of ride. Most versions also get an XDS electronic differential lock that helps you get the power down more quickly out of tight corners. Only the most powerful variants get multi-link rear suspension. Engine-wise, there's a wide choice, with most options available with an extra cost DSG auto gearbox if you want it. If you're able to stretch to a post-'17-era facelifted version of this model, we'd recommend the newer three cylinder TSI petrol unit that puts out 115PS and when carefully driven, is capable of returning diesel-like running costs. It can't match the returns of the volume TDI variant of course, the diesel powerplant uprated to 115PS as part of the facelift. We're less enamoured with the other mainstream TSI petrol engines, a 110PS a 125PS a 150PS EcoTSI unit and a 180PS Most will want the popular TDI 150PS model, which offers a decent combination of performance and economy; expect on the combined cycle and 112g/km of CO2. This TDI engine can also be found in uprated 184PS guise. At the top of the range sits the 4WD 'X-PERIENCE' soft roading estate. Or, if your priority is performance, the 'Cupra 300' variants should appeal, models that use a 300PS petrol TSI turbo engine, a set-up mated to 4WD if you go for the DSG ST estate upon a time, not so very long ago, estate cars were purely for estate people - those with dogs, photocopiers to cart about and weekend leisure equipment. You wouldn't really consider one if you didn't actually need to. But station wagons like this Leon ST are rather different. Why wouldn't you choose one of these rather than a standard Leon five-door hatch? After all, the ST variant isn't much more expensive, looks just as good, drives just as well and offers a lot more everyday flexibility Like the best of its family hatchback-based competitors, it's also successful in offering nearly all the practicality in a larger estate car with the easy parking and deft manoeuvrability of a much smaller one. Is there really any point in considering a five-seater compact Scenic-shaped People Carrier when a car like this SEAT can be so versatile? What it all boils down to is that, with some great engines, a design that's bang up to date and a shape that doesn't instantly appear as if you've started down the slippery slope to pipe and slippersville, the SEAT Leon ST has a whole lot going for it. If you need an used medium-sized estate from the 2013-2020 period but wouldn't want to be seen dead in one, there is an alternative to a small SUV or MPV. If that's the kind of thing you have in mind, make sure this Spanish contender's also on your wish list. It might surprise you.

The very latest Leon Cupra is the most powerful mass-produced Seat of all time; with 300hp, 380Nm torque, optional all-wheel drive (available only with the Break) and a multitude of sophisticated features, the revamped Leon Cupra ST is sure to strike fear into the hearts of its rivals, though you might not think it at first glance. There’s nothing particularly aggressive about the design of

It’s called the Seat Leon Something or Other 300 4Drive estate and when I came out of my office and saw it sitting there in a car park, my shoulders sagged as if I’d suddenly got a puncture. The Golf R estate isn’t much to behold but this somehow was even worse.

Biggest news for the new Cupra 300 is the new 4Drive ST estate - is it really a Golf R on the cheap?By Dan Trent / Sunday, 19 February 2017 / Loading commentsReading theSEAT Leon Cupra 300roadtest you may have spotted a surprising number against the ST estate's 0-62 time. Yes, seconds is a lot faster than the rest - nearly three quarters of a second quicker than the three-door, even when fitted with the launch control equipped DSG gearbox. How so? The clue is in the name, the DSG version of the Leon ST Cupra gaining SEAT's 4Drive all-wheel drive. Given this is an all-new addition to the Cupra range we reckoned it merited a more detailed the fixation with tenths here and there 0-62mph is probably the least important measure of comparative performance, especially when we're talking about estate cars. It does, however, hint at a different character for this new different from other Leons. But not the closely related Golf R. The Golf line-up has just received a wide-ranging update that includes a token 10hp bump for the R to 310hp over the SEAT's 300hp - torque is identical at 280lb ft in both. More significant is the R's new seven-speed DSG gearbox, the SEAT keeping the existing in the trunkBefore addressing the elephant in the room let's see how the ST compares with the rest of the Cupra 300s. You can still get the estate as a manual and in that form it puts its power through the front wheels like the rest of the range. Which is to say helped by theVAQ torque shuffling axlebut hindered by some rather unpleasant wheel hop when you attempt to get on all its apparent similarities the 4Drive is a very different car in its character, reflected in its £3,000 premium over the FWD manual. You'll have your own views as to whether the rough edges of the regular 300's power delivery are appealing rawness. Or just really annoying and evidence of VW carefully managing the brand hierarchy by denying the Spaniards the anti-tramp system it includes on equivalent FWD it to say the all-wheel drive estate doesn't do it, and feels a lot more grown-up and mature as a result. The irrelevance of that 0-62 time is played out on the road though, the additional 105kg blunting the standard car's more ballistic accelerative 4Drive ST is pleasingly fast rather than excitingly so but 300hp is still plenty to be making rapid progress. In the more subtle colours it works well with the Leon's understated lines too - as stealthy high-speed family transport there's considerable appeal. And on the road there seems little compromise over the front-driven version and rather more to enjoy, especially when the roads are it inAt the limit the 4Drive system does blunt the Cupra's edge somewhat. In addition to the extra weight, losing the VAQ front axle also sacrifices its clever torque vectoring abilities. Instead the 4Drive is limited to an open front diff and brake nibbling interventions and feels a little more inert on turn-in and more set in its ways once understeer has arrived. It can be teased back into line with a lift but the playfulness that makes the front-driven ST such an amusing combination of hot hatch hoonery and estate practicality has been thrown out with the bath water. Pays your money and all that. But we'd bag the four grand saving and stick with the front-driven one, axle tramp and when you return to the inescapable Golf R comparison. Now, the hope would be a SEAT badge and subsequent 'loss of face' could be offset against a healthy cost saving. That may yet play out once finance and lease numbers have been crunched. But on the bottom line price it's bad news for the Cupra, given the R costs just £815 more. Argue the toss about brand snobbery and what the neighbours will think. But at a purely practical level that gets you a brand new Golf R with the very latest Active Info Display (basically Audi's Virtual Cockpit by another name) as icing on an already tastier cake. Superficial? If there was a big premium for the privilege of a posher badge and squidgier interior plastics then yes.
Rychlý test SEAT Leon ST Cupra 300 4DRIVE DSG. Autor: Pavel Srp - 24. 10. 2017.
Skip to ContentSkip to FooterIt’s capable and handsome, but the new Leon ST lacks the performance and engagement of its predecessors24 Jul 2021Cupra’s take on the small performance estate has long been an attractive one, combining the Leon ST’s practical body with a potent mix of VW Group’s high performance elements and all-wheel drive at a reasonable price. But what made previous examples really interesting was SEAT’s (or is that now Cupra’s?) habit of going off-piste in the UK by offering dealer-fit Abt tuning kits, larger Brembo braking kits and Akrapovič exhaust systems to its customers, taking otherwise familiar packages up and over what Volkswagen was willing to offer. For now, the new Cupra Leon ST 310 4Drive does without these extras. So, as a baseline for the new range, and with a slick new look, how does it get on?The basics initially look good – that trustworthy starting point of a 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Haldex all-wheel-drive system is present and correct. Peak power and torque figures are slightly less than those of the new Golf R estate at 306bhp (-10bhp) and 295lb ft (-15lb ft), the latter available from 2000rpm, and the ST also does without the R’s torque-vectoring rear differential. While power remains static compared to the previous model, weight seems to be constantly creeping up, the Leon coming in at a pretty chunky 1565kg – 83kg up on the previous-gen Leon ST. Front-wheel drive and/or lesser-powered Leons are reserved for the hatchback chassis and powertrain might be familiar to the old version of the ST, but the interior isn’t, and it’s a revelation – clean, modern, and full of interesting materials, making both VW’s and particularly Audi’s recent batch of interiors look cheap and bland. Yes, the infotainment system and overall lack of buttons still frustrate, but with the new controls on the steering wheel giving quick-fire access to the drive modes, the job of changing up the Leon from its comfort-mode default to something more responsive is nothing like as frustrating as the same process in a Golf reviews Even better, the Golf’s optional variable dampers are standard fit, so too 19-inch wheels on Hankook Ventus rubber, making the asking price of £38,570 seem like distinctly good value – if spending nearly £40k on a Leon doesn’t make you wince. Yet the reality is that in 2021 the likelihood of anyone actually dropping that sort of money in bulk on a car such as this is unlikely, with the monthly figure being a more important the road, where one would hope the Cupra Leon ST would initially bubble up with enthusiasm, the experience isn’t that fulfilling. The Leon’s piped-in engine tone feels contrived, the steering accurate but synthetic, and the transmission and throttle response lacking. Concentrate on making your inputs deliberate and things do tighten up, but it’s not particularly natural or intuitive, and the ST lacks the immediacy of a Renault Mégane RS and the enthusiasm of the new Hyundai i30 in its German counterparts, the variable dampers do work a treat though, and the overall ride and handling balance is well considered, if somewhat blunted by the Leon’s mass. That extra weight is felt under power too, with a merely average (but Golf R estate-matching) 0-62mph time. Despite lacking a chunkier set of Brembos available in high-spec Formentors, the standard set-up still provides plenty of power though, and a slightly more natural pedal feel than that of other VW Group we just can’t help feeling there’s more to give, and indeed more to come. A little extra punch from the engine, sharper response from the steering, maybe some extra bite from the front axle – these all feel like small and achievable upgrades, which is where previous higher-specification models such as the Cupra R ST Abt edition all the VW Group marques, it’s Cupra that seems to be most interested in pushing outside of a remit which has yet to be fully established being such a new entity – the Formentor VZ5 with its Audi-derived five-cylinder engine is a case in point. We sincerely hope that we see a little more of that rebellious spirit in future and rivalsBeing purely all-wheel drive and with the most powerful engine option, the Cupra Leon ST is only available in two well-equipped forms. The VZ2 opens the range at £38,570, with the VZ3 variant starting at £40,535 and which builds on an already impressive roster of standard equipment with a different wheel design and heated leather sports seats available in either black or the fetching Petrol rivals include the aforementioned Golf R estate that will likely be both more expensive and not as well equipped when it reaches the UK later this year. Ford’s Focus ST estate is another alternative that’s crucially available with both a manual transmission and front-wheel drive. Although good to drive, as a package it does fall slightly short of the Cupra with its gruff powertrain and iffy outside of the direct competition, ‘around £40k’ will net you the Mercedes-AMG CLA35, BMW’s 330i estate or even the Jaguar XE P300.
